This just came out last Tuesday (05.14.13) on Captured Tracks… it was the surprise EP from Wild Nothing entitled Empty Estate. I cannot tell you how much fun I have listening to this album nor can I tell you how much fun I had designing it. Too much, too put it simply. The paintings of Eric Shaw really fit perfectly with this release… it’s quite ridiculous actually. Once again Perfect|Midnight|World has some great things to say:

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. Less than a year after releasing the lovely, “Nocturne”, Jack Tatum has once again stepped out as Wild Nothing to release new music, this time in the form of a 7 track EP entitled, “Empty State”. Further good news, is that the first taste of the forthcoming release is already on the internet for everyone to enjoy. “A Dancing Shell” is the first single, and you will notice almost immediately that we’re in a different zone here than previous Wild Nothing releases. The new track is loaded with swirling, late night synths that give off a generally more relaxed and free form atmosphere. The dreamy jangle pop guitars that have guided many of the artist’s finest cuts are still there, but they’re sharing stage with 80’s tinged electro pop textures and even something resembling a distorted bit of sax (perhaps inspired by his recent trip to Miami’s neon hued nights, or his renewed admiration for Brian Eno and David Bowie). It all makes for an exciting listen and a warm weather sound that is just in time to soundtrack those summer night parties.

Amazing new one from MINKS entitled “Everything’s Fine” off their upcoming 08.06.13 release, Tides End, via Captured Tracks. This release is not just beautiful musically, but also due to the gorgeous paintings from Everest Hall. Design and layout by me (Ryan McCardle). Here’s what Perfect|Midnight|World had to say:

It’s been a while since we last heard Minks’ brand of dreamy goth pop, but now they’re coming back with a new album and a fresh new sound. “Everything’s Fine” is a new track from the forthcoming Tides End, and it sports a reverberating synth line, electro drum beats, and a melodic hook that is immediately infectious - all while textured beats and ethereal hums flesh out the sound, giving it a full, lived in feel. This is the Minks playing for the dance floor, but the sweet, somber tone is enough to remind you that you’re still listening to a band that has a melancholic heartbeat. Highly recommended.

The new EP from the Casket Girls, released on RSD. Lovin’ this song SO much. Got to work with thee Will Schaff on this one, art and layout wise. Nothing Sounds Better has some kind words below:

I had forgotten how many musical projects Ryan Graveface was involved in - Dreamend, where he’s recently gone NBC Hannibal and gotten in a serial killers’ head; Black Moth Super Rainbow, the well-named, unique pop enigma; The Marshmallow Ghosts, which I’m less familiar with but seem to fit the same vein, if more delightfully Halloween appropriate; and The Casket Girls, where he shifts a haunted house into an alternate dimension, and more besides.

The Casket Girls is a band aptly named, and quite recognizably backed by Graveface’s work. Even leaving subject matter and band name aside, his work has always been amply imbued with jarring, otherworldly elements that skew towards more upbeat and sinister registers. Very Halloween chic I was going to say, but the first thing to come up when I googled that was a Pinterest board. Moving on.

Goth pop is hip right now (says a man shamelessly shackled to that bandwagon). There are numerous wonderful artists (Zola Jesus being a favorite) and a neverending plethora of… less noteworthy recent entries (apologies, Esben - I tried) in a field becoming increasingly crowded yet ever more diverse. Graveface gives The Casket Girls a subversive, legitimately spooky bent that gives the group an diaphonous leg up.

The Record Store Day-released Self-Titled mini-LP is streaming on Filter [link] and, if it’s opened the - casket, grave, pick your pun - of that id you thought you’d buried deep, the digital/cassette release is available from Graveface’s own self-titled record label [link].

The final of the five tracks is especially delicious, with direct-from-DVD organ and a monstrous, twisted swell that devours the release’s sweetest melody.

This is what happens when one writes after watching two hours of disturbing, visually arresting horror crime television.

We are extremely stoked for and proud of our friend Ryan “The Hornet” McCardle who helps us do a lot of different design things, such as doing the b-side etching for the CityCop record or the layout for the Trust Fall record and the overall art direction of I Got Brains Fest. Along with helping us, he does design work for GRAVEFACE RECORDS who recently released the new The Appleseed Cast (official page) record entitled Illumination Ritual in which Ryan did the entire design and layout. One day I was minding my own business. Working on some album art when all of a sudden this man came over and asked if he could take my photo. He said not to move and to just continue what I was doing. That man turned out to be Cambridge photographer Jack Davison. He was mid-adventure in Savannah, GA on his 6 month American roadtrip while documenting every aspect of what it had to offer. Give a warm welcome to the newest member of the furhoof family: Nadine Carina.

The Swiss singer/songwriter, currently living in Liverpool (UK), is making an art of experimenting in the way she records music. Her latest EP finds inspiration from an old Tascam Portastudio. Warm and noisy sounding, her latest EP includes songs ranging from gospel-like a cappella harmonies to melancholic folk which recall some of the vibe of her 2011 debut Magic Box, but dwells even deeper through her introspective thoughts. The self titled EP will be released through Furious Hooves this April 2013.

How I wish our planet’s movement was this apparent while staring at the night sky. It could probably make a lot more people realize just how tiny we are compared to this vast unexplored galaxy above our heads.
